Drum Notation

3 comments:

  1. Ali, it's my notation for either a back-beat played on the Hi Hat (so, yes you'll be playing 2 hands on the Hi Hat on 4) or a back beat played on a tambourine (as is played on the recording).

What I said in class was that when you're playing this, once you've played the first back-beat on 2 move straight away over to the H Hat ready to lay the 4. Don't leave you left hand on the snare and try to move at the last minute - Give yourself loads to time.

Hope this helps, keep the comments coming in - it helps everyone.

  2. Ah... I see! Cool, thanks for that. Also, one last thing for this peice of music; there is an open H Hat before the music begins, why isn't it written within the sheet music and is it on 4, the & of 4 or what? or is that irrelevant? Cheers Ali

  3. Ali, the hi hat that starts everything off is written on what is known as the 'Pick-up Bar" - so the count would be 1, 2, 1234 AND (with the open hi hat on the 'and of 4'. When there is only one 8th note written you have to assume that it's on the last 8th note of a normal bar so the and of 4.

    Hope that makes sense.
