5 Stroke Roll Ex. 1

Hey guys this weeks technical exercise/ warm up is based on the sticking of the single stroke 5 stroke roll.
Again it's broken down in to stages so go through each one carefully before moving onto the next one :)
The 2nd ex just takes the sticking around the kit. There are so many combinations so find a few of your own.
The last ex uses part of ex2 as a fill. This mostly just shows you one way of fitting in the ex into your playing. Once you have this mastered come up with your own variations around the kit. Next week we'll look at another variation using the same five stroke sticking. Have fun and rock out guys :)

Week 1 : 2011 - Triplet Exercises

A very warm welcome back to everyone this term. It is a long term and this gives us a great opportunity to cover some really great subjects between now and Easter.

Some time ago, Rhythm Magazine published a list of their top 100 grooves from the last 50 years of music. My goal for us, is to look at most if not all of these grooves over the next few months - watch this space.

This week we started, as always, with a purely technical lesson to start the term. We played triplets on the snare drum - played as RR LL RR etc. We then added bass drums and hi hats to develop cross-independence.

The Drag

Over the Christmas Break I'd like you to work on one particular rudiment - The Drag. A Drag is, as it's name suggests, 'dragging' the stick across the drum to make 2 'buzzed' grace notes with one hand - this is then followed by an accented single stroke with the other hand.

Once you've got to grips with this, we can now go on to look at the 'Drag Rudiments' know as RATAMAQUES. Over the next few days I'll post up three different types of Ratamaque for you to work on.
